Handcrafted goodness from the Ozarks

Or just the N size.

sdc10677This is a size N (10 mm) crochet hook turned and carved out of a very light piece of walnut. It is about seven-inches long and features a comfortable engraved (size on front, and year, wood and signature on back) thumbrest and double jingle rings on top.

People have often thanked me for engraving the information on the hook. I have almost always done that. I always felt that the size, at least, was important and I can’t understand why some people don’t. However, the wood, signature, and year are pieces of information I started engraving just last year. It started during the Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour when a visitor said “I don’t crochet, but that wood is just beautiful. I’ll take it if you’ll write down the name of the wood.”

How? Hmmm… I have a Dremel and a flex-shaft hooked up and a burr bit I had broken off recently, accidentally, by dropping the tool. I inserted the broken bit, turned the dial on “Ludicrous Speed” and set to work. The bit worked great and I was able to to use a little of the calligraphy skills I used to practice (got to get back to that, we lost our calligrapher at the Ozark Folk Center (thanks a lot Rachel) and Jeanette’s been asking me to write on the board).

Since then, I’ve done it on all the hooks I’ve made.

Don't have a need for a broom, crochet hook or triloom, but you still appreciate what I'm doing here? How about buying me a cup of coffee?
