Handcrafted goodness from the Ozarks

Or just the N size.

sdc10677This is a size N (10 mm) crochet hook turned and carved out of a very light piece of walnut. It is about seven-inches long and features a comfortable engraved (size on front, and year, wood and signature on back) thumbrest and double jingle rings on top.

The Perfesser

I wear spectacles and I work with wire. Two seemingly unrelated items, yet…

This hearth broom measures about 28″ and has a natural sassafras handle that’s been carved with a fun “man of the woods” face. In this case, it might be “man of the local university” instead. I made the spectacles first by carefully bending the wire around a mandrel leaving two ends over the nose-piece protruding to act as staples. Then I carved the face and affixed the specs with the staples. The sweep contains more than 10 ounces of broomcorn with a bit of hand-dyed brown broomcorn on top for an accent. See what I mean?

I admit it. I am a geek. I’m a nerd. I like computers and watch sci-fi (loved the new Star Trek movie, but love Serenity more, and haven’t seen Avatar yet, but I will…). When I finished the end of this crochet hook I was reminded of a scene from a sci-fi flick wherein a double star was throwing off matter to create a planet. A binary star. A binary crochet hook made by a woodworking, broom making, computer using web-designing geek… made out of wood, made by hand.

Your daily dose of irony?

I wanted a challenge, so Jen suggested I do a smaller hook. And I did!

This is a size F (3.75 mm) turned out of a lovely piece of black walnut, but it’s got a little extra elegance added in. Between the sleek tapers to the shaft and again to the end, there’s a small embellished grip. At the end, there’s a very fine captive ring (some call this a jingle ring). SDC10517Random Orbits – Triple captive ring, cherry, size I crochet hook
I named this hook “Random Orbits”, highlighting the triple captive ring on the end. It is a hand-turned cherry wood crochet hook, that I designed, turned and carved. It is seven-inches long, carved to gauge. There’s a lovely twinned bead barbell keeping the ring captive, an extraordinarily smooth, engraved (the size I on one side and the wood, my signature and the year on the other) thumbrest and a smooth, slender grip in between.
