“Handcrafted Brooms and more!”
This is last year’s information. I’ll be working with the Ozark Folk Center to iron out the details in early January 2012. However, most of the information is still accurate where other area lodging and dining are concerned. Take a look below, or bookmark this space and check back soon.
This is a long post and you can wear yourself out reading it… or, you can download a PDF file and read it at your leisure.
You can also fill out the registration form by clicking here.

April 29, 30 and May 1, 2011
at the
Ozark Folk Center State Park
Mountain View, AR
INFORMATION
Please forward this (if you received it as an email) or print this, or copy this and hand it out to anyone you think might be interested in attending as a broom maker or as a visitor or student.
THIS DOCUMENT IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE
ADMISSION
IF you are a broom maker, and you are demonstrating or participating in a demonstration, teaching or assisting in a class, hosting a round robin talk or participating in a round robin talk, the admission fees to the Crafts Village where the sweep in is being held has been waived. The evening concert, which is optional, is $10 per person.
If you are bringing family or friends that are not participating in the event, but want to visit, shop, listen to the music or just hang out, the cost for the 3 day event is $14.50 per person. This includes 3 days admission to the Crafts Village and one evening concert either Friday or Saturday. Normally this would run nearly $30!
There’s plenty more to do in the area if you want to come early and stay late or sneak away whilst the brooming is happening… or maybe your spouse will want to look about a bit.
AREA ATTRACTIONS
Of course there’s the Folk Center itself. There are around 24 cottages featuring artisans demonstrating (mostly) traditional Ozark crafts. Lessee now, broom making you had, right?…
On a Friday and Saturday night in the Summer you hardly shake a stick without pointing at someone playing some music. There’s the concert at the Center, music on the square, music on the porches of most of the B&Bs, music in the mountains, music in barns and at concert halls. Oh, yeah, and there’s music, too.
Miles and miles of walking/hiking trails at the Folk Center and nearby Ozark National Forest. This is a beautiful time of year to take a hike, too.
Blanchard Spring Caverns – An incredible living cavern offering 3 types of tours!
Raft or fish on the White River. There’s no shortage of fishing and boating outfitters on the river just north of town. Some of them are listed above (Jack’s and Anglers)
One-on-one classes can be arranged as most of the crafter artisans at the Folk Center are happy to teach, so if you want to add something or if your spouse wants to learn something, this is the time to ask and maybe sign up. For classes, contact Jeanette Larson at 870-269-3851.
LODGING
The Folk Center has set a rate of $75.48 per room based on double occupancy. If you haven’t already, NOW is the time to reserve your rooms. They have set aside 9 cabins with 2 queen beds each for broom makers. No rate increase from last year! This is a great deal!

OUR EVENTS
These are tentative and subject to change. Note that Friday and Saturday events will be open to visitors.
9 am to 12:30 pm class may run longer
1 pm ‘til finished
Sales can go through me as they did last year. I’ll charge 15% commission and you’ll have to charge 9% sales tax, but I’ll handle the filing. I will have my daughter covering my shop and I will be out and about and circulating all day, every day. The alternative – selling through the Ozark Folk Center – is an option. They require a contract, 20% commission, and that you file and pay your taxes at the end of the show (Saturday before 5 pm). Contact me for additional details.
Throughout the weekend we’ll have art brooms on display in the broom shop or in the big top and we’ll allow people to vote and then we’ll have an award for people’s choice at some point. Don’t know what the award might be, but we’ll figure something out.
Am I missing anything? If so, send me an email (shawnhoefer@gmail.com) or give me a call at 870-269-6808 (home) or 870-213-6692 (cell). I can answer most of your questions or direct you to the person that can. I cannot take reservations for rooms!

’tis the season, right? We gather with our family and we look back at the year…
Tonight, we gathered the extended family from the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, AR for a huge meal and a lot of socialization and fun. This was our yearly Christmas Buffet and it’s at this time that we all get to see how things are going for everyone in the off season and to look back at the year that was.
The news all seemed to be good! Although visitation was just a little lower, revenue was up and expenses were down. That’s good news!
Hundreds of cards and letters pour into the Folk Center throughout the year as visitors send them in and, out of all those cards, the lowest rating was “good.” That’s also good news!
Several of the staff were awarded service pins for 5 to 10 years service with the parks system.
Ellen White was recognized as the Volunteer of the year. She works tirelessly in the Ozark Folk Center’s wonderful garden and smiles while she does it! Ellen grins as she’s handed her certificate and says “I like playing in the dirt.” That’s devotion!
Donna Farar was given the “Bette Rae Miller Spirit Award” for her incredible devotion to the Folk Center and its music program. She takes care of the visitors and the musicians, the concessions and stage hands and manages to pull off success after success in the auditorium.
Clancey Ferguson was named Musician of the Year and if you’ve seen Clancey, you know why. If you’ve not seen Clancey, then you NEED to make the Folk Center #1 on your list for next year’s travels to see her. She’s a little spitfire of a 13-year-old who can dance and sing and smile and play a fiddle like no one I know.
Jimmie Edwards was given the Hospitality Award. He’s the group sales guy for the Folk Center and he never stops and always thinks outside the box making sure that the visitors and tour groups find us and neighboring attractions and have a good time. He’s not always visible, but he’s always there when you need him!
Kathleen Connole was given a special commendation for her hard work and creativity in the Herb Shop and the gardens. Her tireless efforts and unending teamwork has led the Ozark Folk Center’s garden to new, award winning heights!
Joe Jewel, a musicians’ musician and a craftsmans’ craftsman, also received a special commendation for the many years (somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 decades) of work he’s put in at the Ozark Folk Center teaching, playing, managing, entertaining and selling… it’s in large part Joe’s fault that I am where I am today. Had it not been for Joe, I would never had heard of the Folk Center…
Working and living amongst people like this, it’s hard not to feel honored… just to be allowed to be a part of something as special as the Ozark Folk Center is incredible. To walk and talk to people like Bubba Standard and Sherman Anderson. I have a wallet from Amy Lawrence and an outfit from Gail Lewis. I almost exclusively drink out of steins crafts by John Perry and Judi Munn. My brooms owe a portion of their “look” to Sharon Fernimen in the Basket Shop and it’s hard not to be amazed by Paula, Erlene and Devona in the doll shop. I keep clean with soap from Kay and Jay and wish I could afford one of Jim’s incredible black powder rifles or Tom’s fantastic knives. I stand in awe of the delicate work done by the Widmers. Phillip’s photography and prints are amazing to behold. I get a great amount of joy trading wood and stories of wood with Steve and John in the copper and furniture shop and I get to trade work with the blacksmith, too – I get handles, he gets brooms on the handles. Let’s not forget the delicious snacks and wonderful aromas in the Marva’s country kitchen! And where would we be without the Glovers’ lighting a candle? Honey-do lists – the kind printed on paper – come Troy’s print shop and it’s this time of year that I come to appreciate those ladies in spinning and weaving and the quilt shop a lot more as I snuggle into a bed covered by woolen blankets and quilts…
So when I was named Craftsperson of the Year… well, I already felt honored just being there and that was icing on the cake!
I would be way out of line if I didn’t mention Grady and Melody and Kaye and Paula and Wanda and Mary and Mary and Carl and Tina (Happy Birthday) and Pat and Bette Rae and Lula and my, but the list goes on and none of what we all accomplish could be done without any one of you… not the way we do it today!
I’m honored to know each and every one of you!
Read MoreI didn’t accomplish anything in my wood shop today. Instead I worked on clients website – specifically, Our Friends Photography – where Huey Peters takes some beautiful photographs and makes them even better in Photoshop.
Take a look.
I’ve decided I need to keep my blog more up-to-date. Just adding a blog post once every quarter isn’t working. In order to get my site back up to speed, and since I now carry an iPhone, I’ve decided I want to take a photograph of my work as I finish each project and post that along with the description. Unfortunately, today I don’t have a new project to post pictures of, so I just want to write a little blurb let you know what you can expect: more frequent post; soon to be updated design; and maybe even incorporate some e-commerce capability.
You can help! If you don’t see me updating on a regular basis, if you don’t see pictures of my work showing up, send me an e-mail and remind me to get me to get back to work!
So, I drank the kool-aid and bought a smartphone. To be exact, it’s an iPhone 4.
This from a guy that jokes about being assimilated by the Borg, quietly laughing at folks wired to their iPods an cell phones with Bluetooth headsets and cables and wires. This from a guy that, in spite of a love for all things gadgety, has maintained for years that a phone is good for phone calls and a computer was good for the rest of it.
Why, then, did I do it?
Many reasons…
My schedule was getting all twisted around and I needed a way to keep track of classes and demos and meetings. An iPhone allows me to enter such things on the fly and read it everywhere (Calendar synced with Google).
My bookkeeping skills are awful! Unless I enter something right away, it gets filed in a fashion that no one could ever fix. I now have an accounting program… Er, app… That allows me to keep my books on the go (Pocketmoney).
I really should market myself better, but carrying a camera, much less the batteries and remembering to take pictures is more than I can handle sometimes. The iPhone has a nice enough camera, and it’s here, ready to go! Of course, now I’ll have to get the pics into the posts…
Finally, and this is the big one, it’ll save me money (once I stop buying accessories). I was paying in the neighborhood of $80 per month to take credit cards whether I had any credit card sales or not. Now I process the using Square (www.squareup.com and only pay a slightly higher rate with no monthly minimum of contract or hidden fees.
Stay tuned and I’ll let you know how being a Borg feels…
Take a look!
